Biography-
Scott Lang was born and raised in Coral Gables, Florida, as the son of Bob Lang. He later became an electronic engineer and met and married Peggy Rae. Together they had a daughter named Cassandra “Cassie” Lang. Although he was an electronics expert he could not support his family doing repair work, so he turned his talents to burglary. Apprehended, he served his prison sentence and was paroled for good behavior. During his time in prison, however, Peggy divorced him. Lang had furthered his studies of electronics while in prison and was soon hired by Stark International to work in its design department. When his daughter Cassie was diagnosed as having a serious congenital heart condition, Lang sought the aid of surgeon Dr. Erica Sondheim. Desperate to help his daughter, Lang decided to return to thievery. Breaking into the New Jersey home of Dr. Henry Pym, Lang stole Ant-Man’s Suit. Unknown to him, Pym observed the theft and in his guise as Yellowjacket, followed Lang, curious to see what use he would put the paraphernalia. Garbed as Ant-Man, Lang broke into Cross and discovered Dr. Sondheim was held prisoner by Darren Cross, president of CTE, who needed Sondheim to correct his own heart condition. Rescuing Sondheim and defeating Cross, Lang was relieved when Sondheim was able to save the life of his daughter. Lang intended to return the Ant-Man costume to its owner and turn himself in, but Henry Pym offered to let him keep it, provided Lang put it to lawful use.
Powers-
- Ant-Man is able to reduce himself, objects, as well as other people to the size of an ant, approximately one-half inch in height, by means of a rare group of sub-atomic particles (pym particles), the source of which is unknown. He is able to contain these particles in magnetic-field “canisters”.
- Ant-Man uses these pym particles to will himself and other objects to reduce in size or enlarge. The mechanics involve having most of the mass of the nucleus of each affected atom convert into energetic particles which take up orbit around the nucleus – thus, although gravitons do not affect these particles, the mass of the original volume remains intact. Ant-Man’s reducing particle has no time limit to its potency.
- Ant-Man has a masters degree in electrical engineering. He has advanced training and expertise in electronics, having earned an electronics technician certificate, plus additional advanced electronics training he received while in prison.
- Ant-Man is a skilled thief. Even before gaining the Ant-Man suit he was able to infiltrate and hack advanced security systems.
- Ant-Man possesses the normal human strength of a man of his age, height, and build who engaged in moderate regular exercise. At small size, his strength is equal to an ant’s.
- Ant-Man wears a cybernetic helmet designed by Henry Pym permitting him rudimentary communication and control of insects. He rides on flying ants for transportation. He can also broadcast to a range of about one mile, depending on the materials surrounding him. His helmet contains sound amplification equipment which shifts the frequency of his voice so that he could be heard by normal-sized humans despite his diminutive size.
- Ant-Man’s helmet also has a retractable plexiglass face shield and a limited air supply.
- Ant-Man’s Wrist Gauntlets enable him to fire bio-electric blasts of adjustable force. His helmet is able to fire ‘disruptor’ blasts of concussive force.
- Ant-Man can shrink to sub-microscopic size, and thereby enter the countless “subatomic universes.
Raymond “Ray” Palmer, is a physicist and professor at Ivy University in the fictional city of Ivy Town, somewhere in New England, specializing in matter compression as a means to fight overpopulation, famine and other world problems. Using a mass of the white dwarf star matter he found after it landed on Earth, Palmer fashions a lens that enables him to shrink any object to any degree he wishes. During a spelunking expedition, Palmer and his students, along with his girlfriend, lawyer Jean Loring, find themselves trapped in a cave. In desperation, Palmer secretly uses the lens he has carried with him to shrink himself in order to be able to climb through a small opening in the fallen rocks sealing the cave, knowing he will likely explode (compression destabilizes an object’s molecular structure causing it to explode). Using a diamond engagement ring, Palmer enlarges the hole sufficiently and descends to the floor to try to alert the others of the escape route before dying. However, upon entering the lens’ beam, he finds himself returned to normal size and without danger of exploding. As the lens is covered with cave moisture, Palmer believes this has altered the beam to allow this strange effect. When subsequent experiments still result in objects exploding, Palmer concludes some unknown force in his own body allows him to safely size-shift. He decides to use this effect to become a superhero. His survival was contingent upon the discovery of the compression matrix, a fabric able to spread the effects of the ray on the entire body, stabilizing it. The prototype matrix later became his costume.
Powers-
- The Atom created a belt tool to control his miniaturization to subatomic size with an emergency backup mechanism in his gloves, and developed a costume that he can wear at most times that only becomes visible when he shrinks significantly. In addition, he developed equipment that allows him to decrease his weight in addition to his size, allowing him to glide on air currents on a low setting, while a high setting allows him to handle or strike objects with the equivalent strength of his normal size and build.
- The Atom possesses the power to alter his size down to the subatomic level while retaining his natural strength level. This is accomplished by using the remnants of the white-dwarf star made into a belt buckle worn with his costume.
- The Atom is able to ride phone lines to his destination by dialing a number and traveling through the handset and shrinking small enough to travel on photon signals through fiber optic cable.
- The Atom is a member of the Indigo Tribe. As a member he possesses an indigo power ring powered by compassion, which provides him with flight, energy projection, and a protective force field. He also utilizes a staff capable of duplicating the abilities of other wielders of the Emotional spectrum within range.
- The Atom has the ability to allow others to shrink down with him if the situation requires it. However, this ability is relatively limited; initially anyone other than himself who was shrunk would explode after two minutes if not returned to their normal size, although he was later able to extend this time to around an hour.
- The Atom is one of the few heroes in the DC Universe that has 100% control over his body on the molecular level , thus making him exponentially more powerful than he is often portrayed; he is limited only by his application of his powers.
- The Atom has the ability to make his costume appear and disappear at will by shifting its atoms between this dimension and another.
- The Atom’s most impressive feats include shrinking into Superman’s bloodstream and manually rearranging his molecules to create Kryptonite and defusing Black Lantern Al Pratt’s Atomic Punch and resizing within him, ripping his body apart in the process.
