Billy Batson is a homeless 12 year-old newsboy who sleeps in the subway station of his home city. A mysterious man in a green cloak asks Billy to follow him into the subway station, where a magic subway car painted in unusual shapes and colors escorts them to an underground throne room, which is inhabited by a very old man with a long beard and a white robe. As the man in green disappears, the old man on the throne explains to Billy that he is the Wizard Shazam, and has used the powers of “the gods” – Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, hence the name “Shazam” – to fight evil for over 3,000 years. However, he has now grown too old to continue and is in need of a successor. The wizard explains that Billy was chosen due to his misfortune: he had been thrown out by a greedy uncle who stole his inheritance following the deaths of his parents later retellings of the origin would also note that Billy was chosen for being “pure of heart. Ordered by the wizard to speak the name “Shazam,” Billy is struck by a sudden bolt of lightning and transformed into an superpowered adult in a red costume with gold trim. Carol Danvers entered the Air Force upon graduating from high school to pursue her love of aircrafts and her dreams of flying. Carol was a top student at the Air Force Academy and enjoyed a rapid career advancement rising to the rank of Major. Because of her stellar performance, superb combat skills and natural intellect, Carol was recruited into the intelligence field. Following her affiliation with the C.I.A., Carol took a position with N.A.S.A. as the security director for Cape Canaveral. It was in this capacity that Carol first met Captain Mar-Vell, the Kree warrior. In her official capacity, Carol was challenged with unraveling the mystery of this alien soldier. During her investigation, the two forged a unique bond, first as friends and then as lovers. It was this relationship that would change Carol forever.Captain Mar-Vell’s mortal enemy, Colonel Yon-Rogg kidnapped Carol, using her as bait in his conflict with Mar-vell. In the course of the battle, Carol and Mar-vell were caught in the explosion of a Kree Psyche-Magneton device. The energy bombardment caused Carol’s genetic structure to be melded with Mar-vell’s. While Mar-vell was apparently unaltered by the event, Carol was now a perfect hybrid of Kree and human genes. In addition, she possessed all of Mar-vell’s Kree knowledge and training. Through this transformation, Captain Marvel was born.
Powers-
- Captain Marvel possesses superhuman strength, endurance, stamina, flight, physical durability, a limited precognitive “seventh sense”, and a perfectly amalgamated human/Kree physiology that renders her resistant to most toxins and poisons. She can also survive in space.
- Captain Marvel can fly roughly six times faster than the speed of sound, retain her sixth sense, and can discharge explosive blasts of radiant energy, which she fires from her fingertips. She also has the ability to absorb other forms of energy, such as electricity, to further magnify her strength and energy projection, up to the force of an exploding nuclear weapon. She can withstand the pressure from a 92-ton weight, and strike with a similar level of force.
- Captain Marvel cannot absorb magical energy without consequence, though she aided Dr. Stephen Strange in the defeat of the mystic menace Sir Warren Traveler.
- Captain Marvel is an exceptional espionage agent, pilot, hand-to-hand combatant and markswoman.
- Capatain Marvel can temporarily assume her Binary form if empowered with a high enough infusion of energy. As Binary, the character could tap the energy of a “white hole”, allowing full control and manipulation of stellar energies, and therefore control over heat, the electromagnetic spectrum and gravity. The ability to survive in the vacuum of space and travel at the speed of light is possible as Binary.
